Doximity Black History Month Spotlight: Okenna Oruche

Recognizing Black Leaders at Doximity

Feb 09, 2022 · Dox Spotlight

We'd like to celebrate Black History Month by spotlighting our Black Doximity employees. This week, we interviewed Okenna Oruche, Product Manager, Careers, from Texas.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

For me, Black History Month is an opportunity to educate, ground and motivate myself. I spend a lot of time reflecting on the trials, tribulations and triumphs that my community has gone through. There have been so many brilliant diverse thought leaders of the African Diaspora who I draw inspiration from.

What does workplace allyship look like to you?

To me, allies are those who can come together with us in solidarity with our suffering regardless of whether it afflicts them or not. They slow down to listen to the complexity of our problems. They lend us their strengths to create space and support us in what we need. It may start small such as learning from books or sitting down listening to a friend talk through their issues. Or it may involve something big such as opening new opportunities/mentoring someone from a marginalized socioeconomic background. Regardless, what’s most important is the continuous effort to be an empathetic, aware and active advocate for those without a voice.

Are there any historical figures or current leaders that you want to acknowledge?

The Obamas. I intentionally took a week off of school in 9th grade to witness Barack's first presidential inauguration with my whole family. Seeing him work through different internal and external conflicts, from his own personal identity to politics, was so relatable. But more importantly, to be able to overcome it and reach the highest office with class throughout his tenure was outright impressive. Finally, a representation who looked like me. Although he's no longer in office, he continues to fuel my ambition and resilience in life.
