Developing Leaders: How ERGs enhance leadership skills

Sep 25, 2024 · Jessica Tsadwa, PhD

Let's talk about something that's becoming a big deal in workplaces: feeling like you truly belong. Creating a genuinely inclusive culture where everyone feels part of the team is essential. One of the ways we're achieving this is through our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). ERGs are Doximity-sponsored communities led by employees with support from the Health Equity & Inclusion Strategy (HEI) team. They focus on professional development, community building, and advocacy.

Inclusive Leadership

Every ERG has board members who manage communication, engagement, and event planning. This is where inclusive leadership comes into play. Inclusive leaders understand how bias affects the employee experience, know how to address and support colleagues through these challenges, and approach these situations with the cultural humility needed to foster growth. By being part of an ERG board, employees can foster these critical inclusive leadership skills.

Upskilling for Advancement

Being on an ERG board isn't just about learning equity and inclusion principles. It's also a fantastic opportunity to develop other skills that can boost your professional growth. For instance, Oscar Guzmán, LGBTQ+@Dox Spokesperson, mentioned, “While it can initially feel daunting, the board structure provides a support network of peers developing their own skills alongside you. In this role, I have honed several skills, including project management, event planning and internal communications, which are not typically part of my primary responsibilities.”

Investing in the Work

At Doximity, we value the work our ERG board members do by investing in training, programming, professional organizations, and an annual summit to increase their leadership skills. We know this work is crucial for both our organization and individual employees. By putting resources behind these leaders, we create more opportunities for employee advocacy, education and community building.
